Published on December 7, 2005 and last updated on October 13, 2009

There are many Internet users who say that they prefer Firefox over Internet Explorer, but asked why, they aren’t sure. This leaves many people wondering, “What does Firefox does offer to the average user?”

Safer, Faster, Better

As with all browsers, security vulnerabilities do occur in Firefox too, but with Firefox, they are patched within a day or two rather than a month, and Firefox will notify you of a new version with the patch. Once you download it, the patch will be applied the next time you start up Firefox.

Firefox also displays web pages faster than Internet Explorer does. It has an rendering engine (the part of the browser that actually displays the web pages) called Gecko that supports many more of the latest open web technologies used on the Internet than IE, greatly enhancing your browsing experience and helping web developers to move the web into the future. Acid3 is a test that shows well your browser supports the latest web technologies. Try it out in IE, Firefox, and other browsers to see how they match up!

Make your Firefox even better

One of the biggest advantages of using Firefox is its extensibility. There are hundreds of themes and extensions that you can add to your browser.

Themes change the way Firefox looks. You can choose among the ever-increasing number of themes made by enthusiastic Firefox users. If you find that none of the themes satisfy what you are looking for, a bit of knowledge and tinkering with simple stylesheets will allow you to customize the look of your personal browser to perfection.

An extension is a little piece of software that adds to the functionality of Firefox. There are extensions for almost every imaginable use to help improve your browsing experience. These are some of my favorites:

Adblock Plus – This is a must-have extension. It allows you to block distracting and simply obnoxious advertisements (such as flashing banners) on web pages automatically. It even prevents the aforementioned ads from being downloaded, so web pages will load faster. If you are worried about the ethics of ad blocking, using this extension will actually encourage advertisers to create less annoying ads that appeal more to users. Easy to use and indispensable, Adblock Plus will greatly improve the efficiency of your web browsing.

Tabberwocky – Firefox’s tabbed browsing features are great, but sometimes you might want tabs to open differently or even have multiple rows of tabs. This is where Tabberwocky comes in. Tabberwocky is a light, fast extension that gives you a lot more control over how you want the tabbed browsing to work. With this extension, you can duplicate tabs, protect them from being accidentally closed, highlight unread tabs, and much more!

Download Statusbar – Ever been annoyed by the download manager window that pops up every time you download a file? Download Statusbar provides a more aesthetically pleasing and compact solution by showing your downloads in a toolbar on the bottom of your browser window instead. It only shows up when you download something so it won’t take up unnecessary space!

Greasemonkey – This extension is for advanced users who want to change the way web pages behave and look. It allows you to write or install user scripts that dynamically modify the contents of a web page as you interact with it. See userscripts.org to find the perfect user scripts for you! Greasemonkey opens up unlimited possibilities, and a little monkey icon lets you know it’s up and running.

Stylish – This extension allows you to change the way web pages look but with style sheets rather than user scripts. It also allows you to tweak the user interface of the browser. Check out userstyles.org for style sheets that other users have already made!

Gmail Notifier – This little extension notifies you whenever you have new mail in your Gmail inbox. Clicking on the icon will open up your inbox page.

Why Switch?

Often the excuse for not switching to Firefox is that the user is already familiar with his/her current browser and doesn’t wish to spend the time to learn how to use a new one. As a web browser, Firefox is actually very similar to other browsers in how it looks and works. The slight differences can be easily cleared up by taking a look at the convenient Firefox Help. Start browsing with Firefox and you’ll find yourself quickly acquainted with the user interface and wonder how you ever browsed the web before!

Rediscover the Web

With so many cool features and so many useful advantages, it is clear that Firefox has a lot to offer for even the most basic user. So if you haven’t already, try Firefox today and rediscover the web!
